#GivingTuesday – A Special Day for #NoKidHungry

10474262_10202980980592659_2347608654460118345_n

As we come out of the Thanksgiving holiday, it is easy to lose ourselves in the commercial gorging known as Christmas.  It’s the reason Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday (or at the very least, my favorite in the second half of the year).  Christmas is commercial.  Thanksgiving is about feeding the people you love.  With that in mind, I’m sharing this with all of you in hopes it will catch your eye.  Today is Giving Tuesday, a special fundraising day for No Kid Hungry.  And this year, the amazing people at Hickory Farms are matching donations TODAY.

No Kid Hungry connects kids in need with nutritious food and teaches their families how to cook healthy, affordable meals. The campaign also engages the public to make ending childhood hunger a national priority.  This year, more than 16 million children in America will face hunger. That’s one in five. NKH is working to connect hungry kids with the food they need to grow and thrive.

Every dollar you donate will make a huge impact for kids. In fact, just $1 can help connect a child with 10 meals. And with the matching gift from Hickory Farms, that’s 20 meals for every dollar.  If the number doesn’t do it for you, then imagine you have a dollar, and there are 20 hungry children looking at you for help.  And with just that one dollar, you can take care of them.  If that isn’t a powerful image, then imagine feeding one hundred with a five dollar bill.  Or 400 with a twenty.  It doesn’t take much for you to change someone’s life.

If you have children, seen children or have ever been children, you know that there are many things kids cannot do for themselves.  Overcoming hunger is at the top of that list.  Please consider visiting No Kid Hungry today and making a donation of any amount to help reach the $50,000 goal.

Servant Leadership: Dice

DiceLogo5_5

After my recent post on the great things being done by people in our space, I decided this is too important of a topic to not continue.  And my promise to you is I won’t ever pimp out a company that I do any business with unless I tell you.  I’m keeping an eye out for great stories on servant leadership in the HR tech space.  Feel free to send me any stories you have on the topic!

I am partial to good people doing good work.  Over the last couple of years, I’ve had the pleasure of working with the team over at Dice and see how they are working to both support and innovate in our space.  This seems like a good time to share a couple of those stories.

First, the work Dice is doing in the HR space is pretty great.  I love Open Web (and I’m not a recruiter, which means mostly I just admire it from afar).  I like any tool that makes life easier, and a system that pulls together data from so many sources to create a full picture of the candidate is just that.  In some of my conference sessions, I reference my favorite Jay Kuhns quote, “We used to recruit like Abe Lincoln did.  We put an add in the Gettysburg Post and hoped someone read it.”  Open Web gets recruiters off of that mindset by giving them a much better look at where to spend their time.  While there is sometimes the belief that job sites are invested in pushing as many links to the page as they can, the Dice team has moved to make it easier to spend time on the high quality candidates to get the best fit.  And I dig that.

More than that, though, I am eternally grateful for the wonderful partner Dice has been in our space.  They have invested a lot of time and effort into supporting the social media space, including sponsorship at big conferences (like SHRM annual) and smaller, more focused events (like TalentNet).  Both segments are important to our space, and the Dice team not only contributes their dollars in support, they show up and work to make the events better.

Personally, I’m also in their debt for their support of our annual No Kid Hungry event, helping us raise thousands of dollars for a great cause.  I know that when it comes time to start planning, anything we can dream up will get the support of Terry Starr and her team, MaryLou Garcia and Cathy Erickson.  They’ve been wonderful partners, and have used their resources to make the world a better place in a way that has very little to do with their services.

I can hear the cynics out there.  Yes, yes, of course they benefit from it, in brand exposure if nothing else.  But there are a ton of companies in our space who do nothing of the sort.  We should be spending our time celebrating those that choose to do, that choose to contribute, that choose to help.  Doing nothing is easy.  Being an innovative company that changes the space and works to support our varied passions?  That’s pretty rare.

Thanks Terry, MaryLou and Cathy.  I can’t tell you and the team how much you are appreciated.

Strike Out Hunger at SHRM 2014

In what has become a much anticipated part of the SHRM Annual conference, the social team is once again taking time out on Sunday to benefit No Kid Hungry, this time hitting the lanes in tribute to The Big Lebowski and, of course, NKH mega-supporter Jeff Bridges.

This year, more than 16 million children in America will face hunger. That’s one in five. Share our Strength is working to connect hungry kids with the food they need to grow and thrive. We’re doing our part to connect kids to the healthy food they need every day.  Every dollar we raise will make a huge impact for kids. In fact, just $1 can help connect a child with 10 meals.

The event is sponsored by Dovetail Software and Dice.com.  They have not only helped with providing the event but are also kicking in some sweet items for our silent auction.  We are honored and appreciative to have them on our side once again!  Last year we topped $11,000 in donations.  We’d like to see that number go up!

So, what’s your role?  (Get it?  Role?  Like roll?  Because it’s bowling?  Never mind.)

We have 100 tickets available.  You’ll notice the price is a very reasonable $0.  That’s because we are asking you to jump over to our No Kid Hungry portal and make your donation directly.  You can do that first, or do it after.  You can even do it on site if you really want. Or all of the above.  But please make sure you do it.  The reason we are set up this way is that 100% of the funds go directly to No Kid Hungry.  All of it.  Every dollar.

And since our love for sport and helping others is nearly matched by our love for playing dress up, we are taking the inspiration for the theme from one of the greatest bowling movies ever, The Big Lebowski.  And since it is a costume party, and we have little to no shame when it comes to NKH, for any donations over $500 we will re-enact a scene of your choosing from the film, and post it online for the world to see.

Even if you can’t make the event, you can still make a difference.  Click here to go directly to the donation page.

So grab your bathrobe, your White Russian and a rug to pull the whole thing together, and help us make a difference!

#GivingTuesday – Help Us End Childhood Hunger

It’s been a crazy busy year around these parts, as you may have noticed from the lack of posts.  Sorry.  I’ll try to do better.  Scout’s honor.

Looking back on the year, though, there is no question that the highlight was the great SHRM Kickball event in June.  A great game, a great time, and a lot of great people working for a great cause.  If you were part of that, thank you.  If you haven’t seen it, check out the recap here.

We raised over $11,000 with that event.  That translates to 110,000 meals provided for children without ready access to food.  My partner for that event, the effervescent Brew, put it best.

“Imagine there is a line of 100,000 kids outside.  All of them hungry.  Now imagine we get to make them all lunch.”

That’s pretty powerful, and I get chills every time I think about it.  As a parent, it’s tough to not be moved by that kind of image.  I think we all felt pretty great about what we accomplished.

But then he put it all right back into perspective.

“Now imagine that line is actually 16 million kids.  And even if you could make them all lunch, they will all be hungry again tonight.”

I am thankful for that image as well.  It’s a reminder that we as a society still have a lot of work to do.

Thankfully there are organizations like No Kid Hungry that are helping to solve this problem.  And they have partners like Dovetail Software and Dice.com who step up to assist.

So look back, if you will, at the Thanksgiving dinner (or two) that just passed.  Think about the warm feelings of being with family and celebration of the season.  That’s a gift that no one should be denied, but far too many of the children in this nation don’t have that same experience.  Let’s get back to work on that.  This year, after the mayhem and, yes, violence of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, we welcome in Giving Tuesday.  A chance to help out someone who cannot help themselves, as well as cleanse your karma a little for any misdeeds over the weekend.

Right now you can visit the Giving Tuesday page at No Kid Hungry.  Tyson Foods has generously stepped up to match all donations today, meaning each dollar provides twenty meals.  Twenty.  For a buck.  That’s two hundred meals for ten dollars.  I saw someone get tasered in a mall for less that that this weekend.

Please take a moment to help spread the word, and add a dollar or two to the basket if you can spare it.  Even if you don’t have money to give (and not everyone does), you can visit the Thunderclap page to sign up for free and help spread the word.

The gift you give will be far better than anything you could buy in a store.  That I can promise you.

Help Us Fight Childhood Hunger

SHRM_Kickball_2013

Tuesday, June 11th is a special day for us.  Dovetail has partnered with Dice to sponsor SHRM Kickball on Sunday, June 16th in Grant Park, Chicago.  Tuesday is our tweetathon.  Dovetail has offered $1 per tweet that day, up to $1000.  Our friends at cFactorWorks offered to match that amount, doubling our impact.

When we ask for help in our efforts, some people drop a few dollars in the bucket and think, “These are my friends, of course I’ll help a bit.”  And we love them for it.  But I’d like to offer you another perspective.

Through No Kid Hungry, for every $1 raised, they can provide 10 meals.   That means for each tweet, you can provide lunch for 20 underfed children.  For tweeting.  Or just retweeting!  You don’t have to write anything, just push the button!

When I think about a donation of $25, $50 or even $100, I think of the crowded tables at schools around the country, and the number of plates we are setting down in front of children who would otherwise not eat.  I think of the direct impact we have on them, on their future, and how little it costs to bring some light into young, impressionable lives where there might otherwise be none.

So this week, we would love your help.

If you can help support No Kid Hungry with a few dollars, please do it here.

If you can’t, please consider sharing this story with your network and helping spread the word on Tuesday.  With your help, we can have a tremendous impact on the war against childhood hunger.  Here are a few tweets you can use to help us on Tuesday.  Cut.  Paste.  Send.  Change the world.

Help Me Fight Child Hunger - #SHRMKickball #SHRM13

According to No Kid Hungry, 16 million kids in America live in households that struggle to put on the table. This equates to 1 out of every 5 kids, which would fill over 845 basketball arenas. 22% of kids under the age of 18 live in poverty. Simply put, this is alarming.

Kickball to Kick Hunger?

Kickball, HR and child hunger… One of these just isn’t cool. (No, I’m not talking about HR!)

SHRM Kickball and No Kid Hungry

Everyone benefits when you "do good" for someone. First of all, the person you are "doing good" for benefits. Next, you generally feel good about it. Finally, by telling the story of what just happened, you inspire others. And sometimes, your actions can help change someone's life.

Reach West | SHRM13 Kickball for a Cause: No Kid Hungry

Food insecurity - the limited or uncertain availability of nutritionally adequate and safe food - exists in 17.2 million households in America, 3.9 million of them with children. And that's just today... We never knew how hungry we could have been.

SHRM Kickball and No Kid Hungry

There is, deeply embedded into our collective psyche, the drive to do good. Specifically, good for others, for those who can't do for themselves. And good in a way that can change someone's life. Last June, at the SHRM Annual conference in Atlanta, Dovetail sponsored a small hockey game in the park.

No Kid Hungry. Period

I recently went to the store to buy groceries for my ever growing boys (there are three). The receipt, when finished, stretched from my mid torso to the floor. I almost tweeted the site and then embarrassed by my good fortune, decided not to.

Kick It!! #SHRMkickball #shrm13

If you are anywhere in the vicinity of human resource ladies and/or SHRM then you know that we are nearing the summer solstice - when the earth does a massive axis tilt, CFOs breathe a sigh of relief (because all the HR people have left the building), and 15,000 SHRM members descend upon a convention city NEAR YOU to drink cosmopolitans, cart home obscene amounts of tchotchkes from the Exhibit Hall and, presumably, cram their brains full of HR knowledge.
