Are You Overworking Recruiting?

All of us over at Dovetail Software are pretty excited to be adding new talent to the team.  So naturally we all like to get in on the act with sharing the job openings with our networks via Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, Vine, Klout, Quora, Yelp, Circle and so on.  I posted up the following on Twitter, just to get things going…

Seems simple enough.  Here’s a job, and here’s how we pay people.  Interested?  Come take a look.

What surprised me, though, was the feedback I received on the post.  Not about the job, but just the post itself.  Both on Twitter and directly, I was told how “inventive” the post was, and how “refreshing” my approach seemed.  I saw it show up in a recruiting Twitter roundup.  It was even stolen borrowed by one of my Dovetail teammates.  Which I did not get at all.  How inventive is it, really, to offer to pay people?  Are we that far down the “candidate experience” rabbit hole that this is forgotten?

So much time and effort goes into landing talent.  I’m not saying it is wasted, but we’ve built up entire companies just for attracting the right people.  Sometimes the process starts with something as simple as letting the target know you are aiming at them.  Instead of spending hours creating a strategy on where to source the candidate, I’ve gotten decent traction with thirty seconds of typing.  Has it landed us the right person?  No idea.  I’m not that involved in the search.  But I do know that those thirty seconds, multiplied by the number of people in your organization, multiplied again by the number of people in their networks, adds up to serious amplification for virtually no cost.

I’m not saying you shouldn’t have a plan, have a crack recruiter, have a candidate experience program, or have extensive job postings all over the Internet.  All I’m saying is sometimes just a little effort in just the right place can also have a surprising result.

Help Us Fight Childhood Hunger

SHRM_Kickball_2013

Tuesday, June 11th is a special day for us.  Dovetail has partnered with Dice to sponsor SHRM Kickball on Sunday, June 16th in Grant Park, Chicago.  Tuesday is our tweetathon.  Dovetail has offered $1 per tweet that day, up to $1000.  Our friends at cFactorWorks offered to match that amount, doubling our impact.

When we ask for help in our efforts, some people drop a few dollars in the bucket and think, “These are my friends, of course I’ll help a bit.”  And we love them for it.  But I’d like to offer you another perspective.

Through No Kid Hungry, for every $1 raised, they can provide 10 meals.   That means for each tweet, you can provide lunch for 20 underfed children.  For tweeting.  Or just retweeting!  You don’t have to write anything, just push the button!

When I think about a donation of $25, $50 or even $100, I think of the crowded tables at schools around the country, and the number of plates we are setting down in front of children who would otherwise not eat.  I think of the direct impact we have on them, on their future, and how little it costs to bring some light into young, impressionable lives where there might otherwise be none.

So this week, we would love your help.

If you can help support No Kid Hungry with a few dollars, please do it here.

If you can’t, please consider sharing this story with your network and helping spread the word on Tuesday.  With your help, we can have a tremendous impact on the war against childhood hunger.  Here are a few tweets you can use to help us on Tuesday.  Cut.  Paste.  Send.  Change the world.

According to No Kid Hungry, 16 million kids in America live in households that struggle to put on the table. This equates to 1 out of every 5 kids, which would fill over 845 basketball arenas. 22% of kids under the age of 18 live in poverty. Simply put, this is alarming.

Everyone benefits when you "do good" for someone. First of all, the person you are "doing good" for benefits. Next, you generally feel good about it. Finally, by telling the story of what just happened, you inspire others. And sometimes, your actions can help change someone's life.

Food insecurity - the limited or uncertain availability of nutritionally adequate and safe food - exists in 17.2 million households in America, 3.9 million of them with children. And that's just today... We never knew how hungry we could have been.

There is, deeply embedded into our collective psyche, the drive to do good. Specifically, good for others, for those who can't do for themselves. And good in a way that can change someone's life. Last June, at the SHRM Annual conference in Atlanta, Dovetail sponsored a small hockey game in the park.

I recently went to the store to buy groceries for my ever growing boys (there are three). The receipt, when finished, stretched from my mid torso to the floor. I almost tweeted the site and then embarrassed by my good fortune, decided not to.

A group of HR professionals that leverage social media and blogging are all coming togetherSunday, June 16th to play a friendly game of kickball. Why? It's the start of the annual conference for SHRM (Society of Human Resource Management) and what better way to start a conference than with some fun, some networking, and most importantly making a change.

If you are anywhere in the vicinity of human resource ladies and/or SHRM then you know that we are nearing the summer solstice - when the earth does a massive axis tilt, CFOs breathe a sigh of relief (because all the HR people have left the building), and 15,000 SHRM members descend upon a convention city NEAR YOU to drink cosmopolitans, cart home obscene amounts of tchotchkes from the Exhibit Hall and, presumably, cram their brains full of HR knowledge.

The Forgotten Platforms

Combing through my email each morning, I am regularly greeted by LinkedIn Groups messages, bringing me up to speed on the conversations that have taken place over the last day or two.  I like being able to keep up with several groups this way, and see what is happening that may be relevant to my world.  I’ve noticed, though, that there is an ever-increasing amount of noise in these groups that has little or nothing to do with the topic…

#SHRM12 Swag, Hockey, and Making a Difference

I’d been looking forward to the SHRM 2012 Conference for months by the time Atlanta finally rolle around.  It did not disappoint, to say the least. With a few days having passed, I’m getting messages from numerous channels demanding to know when the swag video will be posted.  Well, wait no more.  This time around, we have a very special event tied to our swag video.  I hope you enjoy it, and I hope it moves you to action.

**Quick  note: For auction information, please visit the SHRMBuzz Site!

There it is.  Not as silly as some in the past, and I promise we will be sillier in the future.  For now, please take a moment to visit the SHRM Buzz site to bid on the sticks or the Atlanta Mission to help us make a difference directly.  Or both! Special thanks to Josh Rock for being my partner on this and moving mountains for the cause, to Shauna Moerke for manning the camera, to Dovetail Software for being a great partner and sponsor, and to Curtis Midkiff for putting up with our schemes, not to mention joining in.

SHRM, Hockey and Helping

baby-bunches-toronto-maybe-leafs1

We are within a week of SHRM12, the biggest event for most HR practitioners each year. Whether they make it to Atlanta this year or not, thousands will be watching the stream from the media team for the highlights of great keynoters like Tom Brokaw, Condoleezza Rice and Malcolm Gladwell. On top of that, a ton of great content is expected from concurrent sessions and a legion of exhibitors are waiting to tell us about their products and services in the Expo hall. What could be better?

How about seeing all that and making a difference at the same time?

HR tends to draw those that give of themselves.  Whether it is being the friendly shoulder in the workplace, the trusted confidant of the manager who isn’t sure of themselves, the voice of reason that speaks for all of the employees in a company, or the one wiling to slog through pages of legal briefs to keep executives out of jail, we are givers.  And when the chance came to help out those in Atlanta who really need it, we couldn’t pass it up.  So the crew found a way to make something out of a lazy Sunday afternoon, and are proud to have the chance to do something special.

This year will see a new event added to the schedule, hopefully one that will be repeated in the future. On Sunday afternoon, after we visit the Expo Hall Grand Opening,  Atlanta will be the host of the first #SHRM12Street Hockey game. (OK, we won’t be in the street, but you get the idea.).

Several #SHRM12 bloggers will meet in what is sure to be an entertaining event. But we’ve taken the opportunity to do more than just make a spectacle of ourselves and each other.

With the support of Dovetail Software, we are playing to raise awareness and money for the Atlanta Mission, which provides emergency shelter, residential discipleship, job attainment, and transitional housing to more than 950 homeless men, women and children daily. Our hope is that we can gather a crowd and donations to help make a difference in the lives of those less fortunate.

Dovetail has already committed $500 to get the ball rolling. In addition, CEO Stephen Lynn has offered to match the next $500 as well. We’d love to blow past that number, but will need help getting there.

So please drop by on Sunday. Take pictures.  Take video.  Watch us flail about, or grab a stick and join in. And please drop a little in the till to help out others.  Jingling is fine, folding is better.  Everyone is welcome to be part of making a difference!  Please sign up here to let us know if you can make it!
