SHRM Kickball Wrap-Up

By now, you’ve hopefully seen all the posts and tweets about the kickball game at SHRM13.  We couldn’t be more proud of what we accomplished. Huge thanks to our sponsors, Dovetail Software and Dice, for helping us make it a reality. Also, of course, thanks to SHRM for bringing us together and supporting our efforts and to No Kid Hungry, the best darned partners a kid could ask for.

And if you somehow still haven’t donated, but would like to, you can find our page right here.  It’s never too late to help!

So, ready for the wrap up?

We hope our friends like our small token of appreciation.  This would not have happened without them!

Here’s a look at some of the game highlights as well!

Help Us Fight Childhood Hunger

SHRM_Kickball_2013

Tuesday, June 11th is a special day for us.  Dovetail has partnered with Dice to sponsor SHRM Kickball on Sunday, June 16th in Grant Park, Chicago.  Tuesday is our tweetathon.  Dovetail has offered $1 per tweet that day, up to $1000.  Our friends at cFactorWorks offered to match that amount, doubling our impact.

When we ask for help in our efforts, some people drop a few dollars in the bucket and think, “These are my friends, of course I’ll help a bit.”  And we love them for it.  But I’d like to offer you another perspective.

Through No Kid Hungry, for every $1 raised, they can provide 10 meals.   That means for each tweet, you can provide lunch for 20 underfed children.  For tweeting.  Or just retweeting!  You don’t have to write anything, just push the button!

When I think about a donation of $25, $50 or even $100, I think of the crowded tables at schools around the country, and the number of plates we are setting down in front of children who would otherwise not eat.  I think of the direct impact we have on them, on their future, and how little it costs to bring some light into young, impressionable lives where there might otherwise be none.

So this week, we would love your help.

If you can help support No Kid Hungry with a few dollars, please do it here.

If you can’t, please consider sharing this story with your network and helping spread the word on Tuesday.  With your help, we can have a tremendous impact on the war against childhood hunger.  Here are a few tweets you can use to help us on Tuesday.  Cut.  Paste.  Send.  Change the world.

According to No Kid Hungry, 16 million kids in America live in households that struggle to put on the table. This equates to 1 out of every 5 kids, which would fill over 845 basketball arenas. 22% of kids under the age of 18 live in poverty. Simply put, this is alarming.

SHRM Kickball Wrap-Up

By now, you've hopefully seen all the posts and tweets about the kickball game at SHRM13. We couldn't be more proud of what we accomplished. Huge thanks to our sponsors, Dovetail Software and Dice, for helping us make it a reality.

SHRM Kickball and No Kid Hungry

SHRM_Kickball_2013

There is, deeply embedded into our collective psyche, the drive to do good.  Specifically, good for others, for those who can’t do for themselves.  And good in a way that can change someone’s life.  Last June, at the SHRM Annual conference in Atlanta, Dovetail sponsored a small hockey game in the park.  Aside from earning the players some strange looks, the game generated hundreds of dollars for Atlanta Mission.  You can read more here if you like.

This year, we have had more time to plan and more people asking to be part of the event.  We’re proud to share that we will be repeating our event, though in a different venue and format.

Sunday, June 16th, Dovetail Software and Dice will be sponsoring SHRM Kickball 2013 to benefit the No Kid Hungry campaign.  We will be playing in Grant Park in Chicago, and have an all-star list of social media personalities making up the rosters.  We couldn’t be more proud of the cause for which we play, or the people who have jumped at the chance to be part of the event.  We have a target of $5,000 this year, a tough be reachable goal.

To make a donation, even of just a few dollars, please click here to visit our fundraising page.  No amount is too small (or too large) to have an impact.

No Kid Hungry connects kids in need with nutritious food and teaches their families how to cook healthy, affordable meals. The campaign also engages the public to make ending childhood hunger a national priority.  This year, more than 16 million children in America will face hunger. That’s one in five. NKH is working to connect hungry kids with the food they need to grow and thrive.

Every dollar you donate will make a huge impact for kids. In fact, just $1 can help connect a child with 10 meals.  Our goal of $5,000, while lofty, is reachable, and will have a tremendous impact!

We will be holding a tweet-a-thon on June 11th to spread awareness and raise money.  Every time @Dovetail, #SHRMKickball, and a link to our page about the game is tweeted, Dovetail will donate $1, up to $1000.  Even if you aren’t able to make a monetary donation, please help us spread the word on June 11th.   Tweets are still free!

There are other ways you can get involved as well.  Here are two great resources from No Kid Hungry you can check out:

No Kid Hungry Action Center: In conjunction with the release of the documentary,  A Place At The Table, NKH has developed a national Action Center where you can find ways to make an immediate impact in your communities. Their founder and Executive Director, Billy Shore, and National Spokesman Jeff Bridges are both featured in A Place At The Table, and the Action Center is a how they help supporters who are ready to act. If you’re passionate about ending hunger like we are, I hope you’ll see the film with some friends, and find actions to take in your area.

Crowdsourced School Breakfast Map: NKH recently released a study showing that kids who eat school breakfast miss less school, do better on standardized tests and are more likely to graduate from high school. They have created a Breakfast Changes Lives infographic that shows the benefits of eating a healthy breakfast. But far too few schools are offering breakfast programs that effectively reach kids who need them. So they have created a map of 115,000 public, private and charter schools across the U.S. and are looking for our supporters to call their local school and help map an unprecedented look at school breakfast in America. They reached their goal of mapping 10,000 schools by March 31, and we have 20,000 schools in our sights. Please consider calling your local school and writing about your findings and experience.

We will be sharing plenty of pictures, videos and our results after the event.  We hope that if you are in Chicago on June 16th, you will join us at 7pm on field #1 in Grant Park.  Even if you can’t make it to the game, we hope you will take a moment to spread the word and help us reach our goal!

Next Stop: IHRIM 2013

DT_Logo-2011-Trans

My thoughts on where I’ll be next and the conference season are up in a new Dovetail Software blog.  Come say hello!

Prophet Motives

DT_Logo-2011-Trans

New post today over on the Dovetail blog about change management, leadership and the secret to success.  Check it out!

March Dovetail Webinar with HRCI Credit!

DT bug

Each month, the fine people at Dovetail Software bring you a free webinar on a topic built to serve the HR community.  This month, we are proud to host Mike Haberman of Omega HR Solutions to talk about Best Practices for Consistent and Compliant Employee Relations.  Please join us on Tuesday, March 26th at 12:30PM CST.  You can register here.

I know, I know.  Documentation isn’t the sexiest topic.  But you do it EVERY DAY.  With every note, every email and every form, you are creating documentation that could either get you into or out of trouble.  Isn’t it worth an hour of your time to make sure you are firing on all cylinders?

And if you are looking for the right source of information, you won’t get better that Mike Haberman.  He is THE HR compliance guy, with over 25 years in the field.  He is an instructor at the University of Georgia School for Professional Education and Emory University’s School for Professional Education, teaching human resources management, as well as being an active speaker and consultant on HR compliance topics.

On top of that, Dovetail has now been certified by HRCI as a content provider, and we will be offering 1.0 hours of credit for those who attend.

So bring your friends, bring your questions and bring your popcorn.  It’ll be a good time.  Scout’s honor.

The Road Ahead

If you are a regular reader, semi-regular reader or highly irregular reader (which, let’s face it, is the most likely choice), you may have noticed a drop in volume on the blog lately.  There’s  a reason for that.

I’ve been channeling my creativity into other areas, notably into my work at Dovetail Software, keynote speaking and writing.  So what’s happening on those fronts?

Dovetail is great, and I’d thrilled to be part of such a great team.  We’re doing some fabulous work with our clients, and I’m happy to get to be part of it.

I’m scheduled as a keynote speaker at Louisiana SHRM and Missouri SHRM, sessions at LEHRN and IHRIM, and a few more in the discussion state.  Stay tuned.  Better yet, pop over to the CeVoke site and see the great things happening there!

Finally, I’m pleased to share that I’ve completed work on my first book, and it will be available in the early spring.  I’ll share more information as it becomes available, but it is coming!

I am, as always, grateful for the support I’ve received over the last couple of years from all of you, and will continue my efforts to earn it.  While the volume of content on the blog will probably never be back to five days a week, I’ll work to keep a regular supply of new material both here and on the Dovetail blog for your consumption.

2013.  It’s going to be a heck of a ride.  Buckle up!

Metrics in the Shared Services World

As you may recall, I’ve a fondness for metrics that borders on creepy.  I love having a measurement for just about everything.  That why as a practitioner, I found myself insanely jealous of those that worked in the HR Shared Services arena.

For them, the path was paved long ago by call centers and customer service.  They have the luxury of seeing what the benchmarks for speed to answer, first call resolution, call abandonment, and other pithy measures should be based on years of similar operations.  At the same time, though, they are still in the HR business, meaning they are first and foremost there to service the employee and put them at ease.  In many cases, they have the greatest level of exposure to the employee population, and their performance will drive how your HR team is perceived.

That’s not to say, of course, that all organizations run this way.  Too often, shared services is looked at as a pure cost play, and moves like outsourcing your Tier 1 HR Team are considered.  It’s scary to think that some organizations farm out the task of caring for their employees. Let’s hope that those who do are working with suppliers who are real partners for them!

In the end, though, there are ways to measure how well your shared services team is doing, be they internal or outsourced.  Which brings us, of course, right back to metrics.  How do you measure your team?  How do you track your progress?  How do you know what really matters?  Music to my ears.

That’s why I’m excited for the next Dovetail Webinar, coming up on November 1st.  We’ve got Jim Scully, president of the Shared Services Institute, discussing the flaws of conventional benchmarking and performance measurement approaches,as well as a step-by-step method of defining and measuring shared services value.  You won’t find a better resource for this discussion!  Want to join us?  Hit this link to get signed up.

See you there!

The Black Hole of Adoption: Why HR Tech Implementations Fail.

+1 Internets to you if you remember this film.

Last year, I had the pleasure of presenting at HRevolution and the HR Technology Conference in Las Vegas with China Gorman, one of the smartest HR people walking the planet.  In true unconference mode, we built a list of great conversation questions around using technology as a differentiator in your business.  We wanted to look at the commoditization of HR technology, at how the basic offerings of technology vendors were not terribly different, and then examine what makes the user experience great in some cases and…well…lacking in others.

If you’ve been to an unconference, you’ll know what came next.  The participants glanced at our questions, game them a perfunctory, “That’s nice for you,” and proceeded to talk about something else.  They wanted to talk about all the failed implementations in their lives.  They demanded to know why vendors weren’t better at putting in a system people would use.  The vendors in the room, by the way, agreed, and wanted to know why customers wouldn’t listen to them when they explained the right way to do things.

It was candid. It was friendly.  It was thought provoking.  It was awesome.

The problem is that we didn’t get to share this discussion with anyone outside of the room.  And it is one that should be shared.  There were some wonderful topics covered, despite our intention.  That’s why China is joining me on September 20th for the Dovetail Software webinar, The Black Hole of Adoption: Why HR Tech Implementations Fail.  We will talk about common failure modes, keys to success, and what we’ve seen that can really make a difference in getting your users on board.

Click here to register for the session.  You can drop questions on us during the webinar, or leave them in the comments here.  We’ll take them all and work through them.

Hope you can join us!

P.S. – If you are a fan of this kind of discussion, you really should check out the 2012 version of HRevolution (October 7th) and HR Tech (October 8-10).  They are in Chicago this year, which is an easy city to get to from almost anywhere.  Except maybe Milwaukee.  If you haven’t booked yet, the link to HR Tech will get you a $500 discount via Dovetail Software. What can I say?  We’re givers like that.

The Forgotten Platforms

Combing through my email each morning, I am regularly greeted by LinkedIn Groups messages, bringing me up to speed on the conversations that have taken place over the last day or two.  I like being able to keep up with several groups this way, and see what is happening that may be relevant to my world.  I’ve noticed, though, that there is an ever-increasing amount of noise in these groups that has little or nothing to do with the topic…
